Agon Armonias (Harmony Competition ) 2019

Music and Art competition to familiarize with the Αncient Greek culture and literature exclusive for pupils and students in Rudolfsteiner schools and independents colleges

Dear teachers,

Hellenikon Idyllion, an international artistic-cultural meeting center in Greece, has he pleasure to announce the
launch of a new competition to promote ancient Greek culture and literature. This time, we are not only
targeting Greek learners, but also all pupills snd students in Rudolfsteiner schools and independent colleges who are appreciating the ancient Greek literature like Homers
“Odyssey” and who are interested in this project. In the competition the participants can form a group
comprising max. 12 people (teachers included) working together to provide us with their artistic work. The aim
of this competition is to encourage participants to combine philosophical thinking and artistic creation. The first
price will be a free accommodation for a week in our cultural site Hellenikon Idyllion, "the garden of the Muses".
The second price includes a free accommodation for four days. The price is valid for the entire group, including at
least one adult companion. Additionally the videos of the winner-teams will be published on our website as well
as on Facebook and YouTube. The jury consists of an international academic team.
The task of the competition is the participants to select a quotation of an ancient Greek philosopher, or a poem
of an ancient Greek poet, then, based on it, to compose by themselves a song or a poem and implement it
through a video. The language of the quote or poem can either be a self-chosen modern language or in ancient
Greek or Latin. The aim is to reveal the main notion of the quote, to make it understandable and to transform it
in a suitable context of applicable ideas. The chosen quote or poem should be built-in as the refrain of the song
and should also be readable in the video. Τhe text may be presented in any language.
As concerns the submission of your work, it is important to include the quote used with the name of its author
and the original source, including a brief explanation for your motive for choosing it. The quote needs to be
marked in your work, song or poem, which additionally have to be attached in a written form.

Registration for the competition is open until the 15th October 2018 at info@idyllion.eu, submitting the names,

and the number of students as well as their age and, if possible, a photo of the group., Additionally the names of the responsible teachers should be mentioned. The artistic works, together with the name of your school

and a
self-chosen team-name, should be sent to Hellenikon Idyllion until 31st January 2019 via We Transfer, e-mail or

with a data carrier (DVD, USB stick) to the address shown below. More than one contributions may be submitted
by the same group. The names of the prize winners will be announced by the end of February 2019.

Further information can be found on our website: https://www.idyllion.eu/en/2-3-9_2018.html
The Winner-videos of the past competition, can be traced in: https://bit.ly/2M2YLAl.

The dialogues are in
ancient greek because that competition was concerning only Ancient Greek language learning students.
We would appreciate to receive your feedback about this competition and we would be glad if you show your
interest in it, being available for answers to any further questions.
We are looking forward to receive your registration and your artistic works, wishing you a creative participation
to Agon Armonias 2019.

Seminar: ‘’Speaking and philosophizing in ancient Greek today“... for the one more time in the last 26 years!

Speaking classical Greek and grasping philosophical thoughts in the garden of muses

A project sponsored by Andreas Drekis,΄΄ Hellenikon Idyllion’’

With Florian Feicht, high school teacher of Ancient Greek language from Berlin

Dear friends of the Greek culture and classical Greek language.

Who would not be attracted to revitalize himself in Greece under the Mediterranean sun while speaking classical Greek and exchanging philosophical thoughts? This can be achieved by following a unique seminar in the garden of muses which offers to beginners as well as to advanced learners the opportunity to practice, improve and deepen their ancient Greek language skills. Several working groups tailored to every individual participant will be available, depending on their ancient Greek language level.

High school and university students, adults and professors from all over the world may come together to experience communication in the ancient Greek language, read demanding texts and share their opinions on them.

The seminar will take place in the Garden of Muses, which is arched by pergolas of grapes and situated 10 m away from the beautiful beach of Selianitika. The seminar is a project supported by Hellenikon Idyllion, a holiday resort founded and managed by Andreas Drekis who has been offering this project continuously for the last 26 years. This place is regularly visited by music groups, choruses, individual experienced musicians and art professors and generally by people interested in culture, who are frequently providing with concerts and lectures thus creating a pleasant atmosphere during the evenings in the resort. Guests may also experience a visit to an ancient theatre where they may attend a tragic or a comedy ancient play.

Hellenikon Idyllion is situated on the northwestern coast of the Peloponnese near Aigio at a place which mainly attracts Greek tourists due to its charming surroundings and landscape. The participants of the seminar may choose between rooms with 2 or 4 beds. Adults may also book a single or a double room for a higher price upon request.

Total cost for the accommodation in shared rooms with cooking facilities plus the tuition fees for attending the lectures of the ancient Greek language teacher is 300,00 EUR.
Single rooms are offered for an additional fee by arrangement.
If Greek teachers would like to participate with their class to this seminar at a different time, they are offered a discount by arrangement.

Accommodation for free:
Every class can be granted an accommodation for free with their teacher if the class is willing to perform the theatrical play “Helike Athanatos” in ancient Greek. Such a performance has been given already by a Greek language class from Vienna in 2014 as well as by students, accompanied with three teachers, from the Husum-Gymnasium in October 2015. This year, we are looking forward to materialize another performance to be presented by students of the Husum -Gymnasium under new direction and cast.

Registration may be also made via telephone: Andreas Drekis 0030 210 3461034

We are glad, to welcome the German pianist, music professor and festival director of the “Musikfestspiele Saar e.V.” ,

Robert Leonardy

from 01. February 2018 to 14. February 2018!

He is the exception to the rule for somebody pursuing a career as a pianist: the youngest child of a family of highly talented musicians Robert Leonardy´s first ambitions were in the field of sports rather than music. However, Prof. Fritz Griem, his first teacher at the University of Music in Saarbrücken, immediately discovered the “raw” exceptional talent of the then 14-year-old, who subsequently during his course of studies underwent rigorous training by Prof. Erich Flinsch, the well-known pupil of Liszt (“For a pianist´s career it´s almost high noon”). It turned out a success: Leonardy won important prizes at international piano competitions, he performed in all important European centres of music.
http://robert-leonardy.de/wp-content/plugins/advanced-wp-columns/assets/js/plugins/views/img/1x1-pixel.png
Due to his “late career” Leonardy was initially regarded as a kind of “career changer” by the great conductors. It took some time until – after performances in London, Berlin and Munich – he could finally win recognition, being splendidly reviewed by critics because of his “exceptional keystroke, profound musicality and stupendous technique.” Numerous recordings of albums and CDs, radio and television broadcasts followed. Today, Robert Leonardy is one of the most interesting German pianists with a repertoire ranging from pre-classical up to present-day music.

Agon Armonias 2018

Announcement for an international competition for school classes to promote the ancient Greek language and classical philosophy through poetry and composition.
For teachers of the ancient Greek language and their school classes.

Announcement

With the aim of encouraging people to work with the ancient Greek language and culture, the Hellenikon Idyllion has nurtured intercultural exchange for decades.

Following the ancient Greek competition «Agon Aretes» of 2005, the opera-composition competition «Helike Athanatos» from 2010, and the ancient Greek competitions «Agon Armonias» (2011, 2012, 2017), we are now hosting another competition. The goal is to connect the ancient Greek language, philosophical thought and music-cultural creation.

The quote or verse - not more than 20 words - has to appear in its original ancient Greek form. The rest of the lyrics can be in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, modern or ancient Greek. The music can be composed by the students of the class or an external composer. It is important that the melody and text are easy to learn and will inspire people to sing along.

The Hellenikon Idyllion in collaboration with the Helike Society offers the possibility to its visitors and guests to combine their stay in the Hellenikon Idyllion with an opportunity to attend a Seminar offered in Greek Archaeology and Culture in the framework of the ongoing research work in the nearby site of ancient Helike about 14 km east of Selianitika. The Seminar includes lectures (a) on the archaeology of the Helike area, the ancient capital of Achaia, (b) introduction to Greek archaeology and ancient Greek sources, and (c) on conservation work of archaeological finds from the excavations. See program below.
    Ancient Helike
Ancient Helike is on the southwest shore of the Gulf of Corinth near Aigion in Achaia, about 170 km west of Athens. Helike was founded in the Mycenaean period by Ion, the leader of the Ionian race and became the capital of the Twelve Cities of ancient Achaea. In its territory, was located the famous sanctuary of Poseidon Helikonios, mentioned already in Homer. Poseidon’s fine head is shown on the bronze coins of Helike together with its main symbols, the trident and the dolphin, and the inscription ELIK.

The Classical city of Helike was destroyed in 373 BC by a violent earthquake which greatly impressed the ancients and is mentioned by many writers from the Classical period on down to the Byzantine times. Helike’s catastrophe by the earthquake and invading sea waters is considered to have inspired the Greek philosopher Plato to describe the destruction of the mythical land of Atlantis.

A funding project of Andreas Drekis, Hellenikon Idyllion

To the tavern „Esperides“, which is only 20m away and has its tables just two meters from the sea, many participants of the course come to eat for example delicious filled tomatoes or zucchini or fresh fish. The owner of the tavern, Leonidas, gets all his vegetables from a local farmer. After one or two glasses of wine there is likely to begin an enthusiastic discussion in ancient greek. In the middle of the photo you can see Andreas Drekis, who is sitting at the table with participants and friends of the course!

    Musical housing project 2018/2019
„Overwinter in the garden of muses at the Greek sea”

We are looking for people with an interest in music, culture or nature, who would like to spend the cold winter months from November 2018 to April 2019 in our musical-cultural holiday center Hellenikon Idyllion “Garden of Muses”, directly by the sea.

We offer rent-free accommodation (excluding incidental expenses) in a beautiful 2-room-apartment in our site midst of a 4000-square meter fruit and flower garden. Of course, you can pick from our fruit trees and harvest fresh salad for example. The site is located only 10 meters away from the sea. Furthermore, there are two roofed stages, a music pavilion with a grand piano, many pianos, electric pianos, celli, a contrabass, timpani, a drum set and many more instruments, as well as a collection of notes and a library with cultural specialized books in German.

The initial village Selianitika is located in the north-west of the Greek peninsula Peloponnese, about 30 km east of the port city Patras, at the Gulf of Corinth. The village offers a good infrastructure, shopping facilities, taverns and due its central location a good connection to ancient sites for example Olympia, Delphi, Corinth, Mykene, Epidauros or Athens.

As part of this project we expect of our winter residents voluntary assistance in the management of the complex and short-term incidental work in house and garden, as well as the reception of new guests occasionally.
Garden- and cleaning work as well as house reparations are made by workers mostly.

Our complex consists of 15 apartments and bungalows. For this project, we provide four accommodations with kitchenette and shower/lavatory. Furthermore, there is a common room with a piano and a communal kitchen, which is made for social and culinary gatherings with the guests in the evenings.

Preferably we are looking for musical, retired couples, because the period of stay lasts five months and our musical-cultural holiday center offers the suitable equipment.

Equally welcomed are operable people, who appreciate the nature and cultural atmosphere in the garden of muses. It would be desirable if active musicians would give a few classical concerts during the stay to promote classical music in the Greek province (if required also in cooperation with Greek musicians).

Prospects are very welcomed to visit Hellenikon Idyllion upfront for one week on favourable incidental costs to get to know the complex. Individual proposals and ideas are welcomed.

Gladly you can contact us by telephone or e-mail. Due to the limited accommodations for this project, we recommend an early, non-binding request until the 30.03.2018.

For further information please visit our website: www.idyllion.eu

If you have further questions or remarks, please feel free to contact us. If you send us your phone number, we will be happy to call you for further information.

We hope we got your attention and to see you soon in our „Garden of Muses“!

The diverse and creative atmosphere in the Hellenikon Idyllion; Making music, singing, speaking ancient greek and philosophizing, acting, dancing, painting, practicing gymnastics, resting, eating in the tavern at the beach with like-minded people, etc…

Andreas Drekis, photo taken in 2015, is inviting you to enjoy the creative atmosphere in our garden of the muses!

Why should you spend some weeks at Hellenikon Idyllion during the winter?

For those who want to escape the cold, wet, German winter to sojourn simply and favorably in Greece, we offer and advice to come to our “Garden of Muses” at the Hellenikon Idyllion.

We offer a creative and easy life in our heated apartments and bungalows, which are located in a beautiful garden with mature citrus trees. Our garden is located directly by the sea and you can swim in the sea approximately until the mid of November to keep the body and the immune system healthy.
During their stay, many of our winter guests fell in love with the fabulous surrounding so much, with the result that they have looked for a permanent residence in our small village Selianitika and the surrounding.
We offer the opportunity to get to know the surrounding, the people and the village during a stay at our site.
What makes the Hellenikon Idyllion and Seliantika special in comparison with other Greek places?
    The central location.
In every compass direction are ancient sites: Olympia, Delphi, Corinth, Mykene, Epidaurus and many more. Everywhere is something to discover.
Selianitika is tied to public transportation, so that every distance can be covered by bus. Due to the Greek timing this gives the opportunity of many wonderful slowed down day excursions.
From Athens, Patras and Aigio you can reach Selianitika without any problems. Intercity busses go to Selianitika from many big Greek cities. For those who want to take their own cars, it is possible to take the ferry to Patras. Rental cars are available everywhere.
Medical care is provided nearby. The next hospital is located in Egio (Aigio), ten minutes away from Selianitika. In Egio there are many good doctors who speak English. The closest bigger university hospital is located in Rion/Patra, 20 minutes away from Seliantika. The hospital in Athens is 120 minutes away.
For those who feel like they want to have some snow during the mild winter, there is the wonderful skiing area Kalavryta only one hour away.
    People and getting together.
Many winter guests have their own residences close to Seliantika for many, many years now and are friends with the local Greeks. To get together are the local taverns a good choice. Almost all of them are open the whole year. At all times, you find a cozy tavern with an open fireplace only 100-200 meters away in our small fishing village.
Of course, the Hellenikon Idyllion is a place, where people are welcomed to be together. You can play music together or linger with mulled vine and baked potatoes in our common room. Further you can cook Greek specialties in our authentic stone ovens in the garden and enjoy being together with other guests on sunny days.
    Make music. Educate. Inspire.
The musical inventory offers you next to a grand piano, several pianos and electric pianos, one cello, one contrabass, one guitar, one mandoline, one drum set, two congas, two tympani also two roofed wood stages, which are the center of our unique site.
Since November 2017 you can also use our new, transparent roofed stone stage with sea view to make music.
In this surrounding, you can take time for yourself, to take a step back from everyday stress and to sort yourself again.
Musicians and artists can get inspired by the nature and like-minded guests. Further you can take your time to explore our well-equipped library, to read and to philosophize. You have the opportunity to get to know the Greek culture from the roots and to learn ancient and/or new Greek in courses offered by locals.
    Nature.
Our artistic garden is located directly at the beach of the Gulf of Corinth. Selianitika is located at the north-west Peloponnes midst powerful nature, the sea and wooded mountains. There is something for everyone!
In our 4.000-square meter garden you can find numerous fruits, which you can pick freely, also during the winter time.
You can find olives, oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruits, bergamots, kumquats, eggplants, avocados, paprika, basil, rosemary, thymine, the last grapes and many more herbs in our garden. Those who are interested in taking care of the garden and shaping it are very welcomed to do so.

    Cheap. Individual.

Here you will experience cultural sociable adventure holidays with like-minded people directly at the sea!
During the winter, we offer a special price to get to know the site. The price is determined by the duration of stay, the operating and ancillary costs and your instrument needs.
If you are willing to make music, to teach culturally or to work in the garden occasionally, we will find an individual solution, so that all of our guests are fully valued satisfied and there is shared pleasure at all times!
I look forward to your inquiry, to make the best possible for you!
Groceries and rents are cheaper compared to Germany. In general, life in Greece is cheaper than in Germany. Shopping opportunities for meat, fish, bread (also from the wood oven), vegetables and fruits, as well as a confectionery, a pharmacy and a supermarket are located only 400 meters from our site.
    Kind and sunny greetings,
    Your
    Andreas Drekis
