2020 Program

2020 is a special year for all of us. Our winter guests stayed a little longer because of the pandemic, our first guests came much later because of the pandemic and part of the program had to be postponed until next year. Despite the pandemic, we were able to receive a few guests: The Ancient Greek course under the direction of Florian Feicht, parts of the Leipzig orchestra Musica Viva and the Belcanto Academy under the direction of Ma. Francesca Micarelli and Mo. Massimo Lambertini, as well as individual guests such as painter Heidi Müller, the Dannenberg family, Hannes visited us for the 22nd year in a row. We have three interns this year: Marsha Laila Tute, Vasiliki Anagnostopoulou-Stamatopoulou and Svea Westphal. Vasiliki offers violin lessons, Svea accordion lessons. We look forward to the Greek courses with Antonia Kyrilou, the pianist Nathan Steinhagen, a yoga course and some other guests and workshops. The program this year may be smaller, but the Hellenikon Idyllion is open, the garden is in bloom, the sea is clear and the atmosphere is as creative and warm as ever!

The following parts of the program take place:

July 18 - August 03, 2020

Ὦ φίλε Φαῖδρε, ποῖ δὴ καὶ πθεν;

Τί ἐστι τὸ Ἑλληνικὸν Εἰδύλλιον ;
Πάντα δὴ ταῦτα, ὦ φίλε Φαῖδρε, θαυμαστὰ καὶ ἄριστα γε φαίνεται, ἀλλ᾽ὅ τι τὸ Ἑλληνικὸν Εἰδύλλιον ὄντως ἐστὶν οὐ δοκεῖς μοι σαφέστερον πω ὁρίσαι. Ἄρ᾽ ἔχεις εἰπεῖν τί τῷ ὄντι τυγχάνει ὂν αὐτὸ, καὶ τοῦ ἕνεκα ;
Ποία δὲ γίγνεται ἡ διδασκαλία;
Θαυμάσιον γ᾽, ὦ φίλε. Οὐδὲν γὰρ τοιοῦτον, ὅσα γε τὰ νῦν ἐμοὶ δοκοῦντα, πώποτ᾽εἶδον. Ἄρ᾽ ὑπάρχει καὶ ἄλλοθι τι ὅμοιον ;

Uniquely interesting archaeological excursion in English

Archaeological excursion – The rediscovered lost city of Helike
Visit and guided tour to the Archaeological Site & the Conservation Laboratory
The Hellenikon Idyllion offers its visitors and guests the great opportunity to take part to a fascinating archaeological trip during their stay in its premises. The trip includes a visit and guided tour to the ancient site of Helike and the Conservation Laboratory in the contemporary village of Eliki preserving the ancient name of the region’s capital city.
After the visit and tour, we will enjoy a nice meal in one of the sea-side tavernas of the area and have the opportunity to discuss with the Helike Project Director Professor Dora Katsonopoulou the history and archaeology of the area. Learn from the experts!
A brief note on Helike: Ancient Helike was located on the southwest shore of the Gulf of Corinth near Aigion in Achaia, about 170 km west of Athens. Helike was founded in the Mycenaean period (14th century BC) by Ion, the leader of the Ionian race and became the capital of the Twelve Cities of ancient Achaea. In its territory, was located the famous sanctuary of Poseidon Helikonios, god of waters and earthquakes, mentioned in Homer. Poseidon’s fine laureate head resembling the god’s representation on the Parthenon frieze, is shown on the Classical bronze and silver coins of Helike accompanied by the main attributes of the deity, the trident and the dolphin, and the inscription ELIK (photo below).
The Classical city of Helike was seriously destroyed in 373 BC by a violent earthquake which greatly impressed the ancients and is mentioned by many writers from the Classical period on down to the Byzantine times. Helike’s catastrophe by the earthquake and invading sea waters is considered to have inspired the Greek philosopher Plato to describe the destruction of the mythical land of Atlantis. However, the archaeological excavations in the area by the Helike Project under the direction of Professor Dora Katsonopouloy have shown that Helike was revived a few decades after the earthquake and a new rich settlement was developed in its area, including the excellently preserved Dye-Works site which we will visit, the only one surviving intact from the 3rd century BC in the entire Mediterranean basin (photo below).

Parts of the "Musica Viva" orchestra from Leipzig come to visit

The visit to the orchestra was supposed to be canceled, but some of the musicians used the discounted price offered by us to go on a musical vacation with the family.

Practice with a concert on August 1st with the following works:
Giuseppe Verdi - Overture “La Forza del Destino” (original score)
Antonin Dvorak - 9th Symphony (student score)
Nikos Skalkottas - from 5 Greek dances - Epirotikos (strings only)
and much more!
The “musica viva” chamber orchestra is an amateur orchestra and consists of music-loving students and professionals aged between 20 and 40 who enjoy making music together in their free time. The ensemble was founded in 1994 as the school orchestra of the Friedrich-List-Gymnasium in Leipzig. In 1998 the orchestra moved to the Humboldt School, following the then conductor.
In the past, concerts were held regularly at the Humboldt School together with the youth and children's choirs. Some major events were the performance of Gluck's “Orpheus and Eurydice” at the Schauspielhaus in Leipzig (2005) and the performance of Offenbach's operetta “Orpheus in the Underworld” (2010) together with the high school's youth choir.
In addition to the regular concerts with a large cast, we play at various events with a smaller cast, for example as a quartet.
Our repertoire mainly includes classical pieces, but also film music and light music. In 2001 we traveled to Ivanovo, 300 km east of Moscow. At the Russia-wide Firebird Festival we won 1st place in the symphony orchestra category. Our concerts take place next to the auditorium of the Humboldt School in various churches in and around Leipzig. Further concerts took us to Sonnenstein Castle, the Melteritz quarry, the Lauenstein Castle Eastern Ore Mountains Museum or Bellevue Castle.
We are always on the lookout for new musicians from all vocal groups who would like to continue cultivating their musical skills with us in addition to everyday study and professional life.
Since December 2018 our chamber orchestra has been artistically directed by Aristides Strongylis, born in Athens in 1974. Aristides Strongylis studied guitar and composition in Athens as well as composition at the Leipzig University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" with Siegfried Thiele and Dimitri Terzakis. He received important impulses for his compositional work in master classes and through encounters with personalities such as Jonathan Harvey, Peter Eötvös and Kaija Saariaho. In addition, he took conducting lessons from Johannes-Erdmann Ruddies and Tobias Engeli during his studies and privately.

Yoga & Cantienica course, increasing well-being through effective body training
In the fifth year with Sigrid Westenfelder, Cantienica and Anja C. Deckenbach

We are surrounded by a paradisiac garden and well accommodated directly by the sea. The seminar takes place four hours a day, one day is free. Enough time and pleasant temperatures for swimming and exploring the area. The mountain lakes Tsivlos and ancient celebrities such as Delphi of Mycenae are waiting for us.

More information about the seminar and contact can be found at
www.sigrid-westenfelder.de (Sigrid Westenfelder)

Tel .: 0176-96904536 (Anja C. Deckenbach)

The Cantienica® method is a particularly effective body training. Precise movements strengthen and network the entire deep muscles from the pelvic floor.
We take the time to trace anatomical structures, let ourselves be inspired for other movement experiences and relive our posture. The spine anchored in the pelvic area finds lightness and stability.
Regenerative yoga and meditation are gentle and nourishing. They lead our attention inwards and invite us to feel and accept us as we are. The stretches work in depth, muscles and fasciae can loosen and the life energy is stimulated. We experience inner peace and balance.

Intensive course in Modern Greek! For ancient Greek connoisseurs (specially adapted didactically) and for newbies!

Taught by the Greek philologist Antonia Kyrilou. A project sponsored by Hellenikon Idyllion in collaboration with the epiStoa association.
With previous knowledge of the ancient Greek language, an easier entry into the modern Greek language is possible. Since writing and vocabulary are already known, it is not necessary to start from the beginning. However, the phonetics of Modern Greek and Ancient Greek differ significantly in terms of how Ancient Greek is taught in most EU countries. This crash course takes these details into account and thus enables you to learn modern Greek quickly.
The lessons are particularly enriched by shared evenings with ancient Greek specialties and musical sounds.
The course takes place in small groups in the Hellenikon Idyllion in Selianitika on the northern coast of Peloponnese in Greece. There are two courses this year:
October 31 - November 15 and October 5 - 10, 2020
Registration also with Andreas Drekis Hellenikon Idyllion: info@idyllion.eu Tel. 0030 6972263356

A guestbook entry:

"A winter in Selianitika.

What a wonderful time we had: Ursula and I spent four and a half months in the paradise garden "Hellenikon Idyllion"... It was  even more beautiful than Andreas Drekis predicted on the phone. One of our tasks during this time was to look after his project over the winter and to welcome and care for the arriving guests. With the competent support of Andreas from Athens, Petros our gardener and reliable craftsmen, it was a pleasure.

I also enjoyed the daily play on the well maintained and tuned grand piano. Ursula and I are determined: we will come back next winter 2020/2021 for the third year...

Andrew Lamey"

Ursula and Andreas will spend their winter in our Garden of the Muses for the third time!

Painting courses with Christian Pietschiny - free of charge for guests of the Hellenikon Idyllion!
Pietschiny developed a way of artistic expression through FLOW paintings. These are colorful paintings that draw their energy from the moment they are created. It is the FLOW that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Professor of Happiness Research at the University of Chicago, calls the “Secret of Happiness”. In a simple and playful way, you will discover abilities in you that you may not have guessed yet and that can have a happy influence on your life. The course is also ideal for those interested who hardly enjoyed drawing in school.
Content and duration can be varied as desired. E.g. Weekend courses, week courses and day courses. The minimum duration for taster courses is 45 minutes. The workshops take place in small groups and are free of charge for overnight guests of the Hellicon Idyllion cultural center. For organizational reasons, however, a binding registration is important, as the respective workshop only takes place with at least 5 participants. One-to-one tuition is also possible. The course time is determined by the participants themselves in the respective course. As a guide, 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon are intended.
The course languages are German and English, with a little French if necessary.
Escape the cold winter and find new impulses at the various FLOW workshops in Greece:
Workshop 1 - "FLOW painting course" from 13.1. until January 18, 2020
Workshop 2 - "FLOW sculpture building courses" from 20.1. until January 25, 2020

PIETSCHINY - ART OF FLOW
FLOW-Sculptures - FLOW-Painting - FLOW-Philosophy

BIOGRAPHY
Pietschiny was born in Landshut near Munich in 1964. He didn't like art classes at school because he wasn't allowed to paint what he wanted - abstract expressionism. Inspired by photos of Antoni Gaudi's architecture, he studied civil engineering and architecture and gained experience with large projects. At the age of 30 it was time for the artistic career, which began with important impulses in the USA, San Francisco, in 1994. Later his studio on the Cote d'Azur (near Monaco) inspired the relief-like painting and the invention of the Yamoon painting style. Countless exhibitions internationally followed. In 2007 he moved to the Elbe in Coswig (Anhalt), south of Berlin, where he discovered a large house opposite the castle as a studio. He lives the mastery of the FLOW, which also gives him a clear view of the world. You can find more information in his books and exhibitions
